Falkland Threatened Plant List

The first national Red Data List of threatened native flora of the Falkland Islands has recently been produced in a paper by David Broughton (Falklands Conservation botanist until July this year) and Jim McAdam.

The Falkland Islands have a native flora of 171 vascular plant species. Although a relatively high proportion of these are of conservation concern, this is poorly recognized both nationally and internationally. Typically, the threatened species occur as only a few small, isolated populations, and they are facing increased pressure from land-use change in the Islands.

The paper gives an overview of the 23 threatened plants as well as covering another 16 species of relevance to the Falklands national conservation strategy. It is an important first step towards conservation of the native flora of the Falkland Islands.
