A set of four Falkland Island stamps have been issued to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Falklands Conservation. The stamps feature various key activities undertaken by the conservation charity which works to protect the unique wildlife of the Islands.

The 20p stamp features volunteers planting Tussac Grass. This used to be plentiful but much has been destroyed through overgrazing. It provides nesting sites for breeding birds and shelter for Sea Lions, Elephant Seals and seabirds. As home to many types of invertebrates, it is also a rich feeding fround for many small birds.

The 24p stamp depicts children from Falklands Conservation junior club, the WATCH Group, undertaking a beach clean. Marine debris washed up on Falkland beaches can be hazardous to wildlife. During 2003-04 a total of 6 beach cleans were carried out in the Islands and several tons of rubbish removed.

The 50p stamp depicts Rockhopper Penguins fitted with satellite tracking devices in order to improve our knowledge of their feeding areas throughout the breeding season and thus identify key areas in need to protection. Through the winter information on migration routes, travelling speed and threats on the way is revealed from the devices.

The £1 stamp features a Black-browed Albatross chick being weighed on scales, not unlike postal scales. This work is undertaken as part of a major programme to study the feeding and breeding ecology of this rapidly declining species. The Falkland Islands are home to over 70% of the world’s breeding population of Black-browed Albatross.
