Gentoo Penguins at Volunteer Beach:
Aspects of Breeding Biology

This scientific paper*, published in Marine Ornithology, reported on a study of 14 Gentoo Penguins at Volunteer Beach in the Falkland Islands. The Falkland Islands hold one of the world’s most important populations of this species, with a total of 113,000 pairs recorded in 2000/01 at 101 colony sites.

The study demonstrates that the timing of breeding and breeding success here were similar to those reported at other colonies in the South Atlantic/Antarctic Peninsula region. In contrast, the comparatively long foraging trips during incubation and brooding were similar to those reported for Gentoo Penguin breeding in the southern Indian Ocean.
