Gentoo Penguins at Volunteer Beach: Aspects of Breeding Biology
Penguin Census 2000: As featured in Latest News, October 2000 and here for the 2000/01 results
The launch of this project to undertake a complete count of Falkland populations of Rockhopper, Gentoo and King penguins.
Penguin Migration: Where Do Falkland Penguins Go in Winter?
Results from the satellite tracking survey of Falklands Penguins in November 1998.
Rockhopper Penguin Satellite Tracking Project: Rockhopper Penguin Satellite Tracking Project
Satellite tracking of the migration of Rockhopper Penguins breeding in the Falkland
Islands during austral winter 2000.
Ecological Study of Gentoo and Rockhopper Penguins: This will include detailed population and foraging behaviour studies and aims to increase the knowledge of the relationships between South American and Falkland Islands' populations, especially at-sea distribution outside the breeding season.
Rockhopper Penguin Study: To determine where Rockhopper Penguins go when not breeding in the Falkland Islands and make comparative population studies of the Falkland, South American, and New Zealand populations, including collection of appropriate data on environmental conditions, fisheries and pollution.
Falkland-wide Magellanic Penguin Survey: A census is urgently needed to provide essential baseline data against which future changes can be monitored. It will be necessary to devise an appropriate methodology for this species which nests in burrows of varying abundance along hundreds of kilometres of coastline.
Site Protection: To survey and identify sites for recognition as Important Bird Areas by BirdLife International. To seek designation of penguin sites as statutory nature reserves with legal protection under forthcoming new legislation for the Islands wildlife. To purchase additional Falklands Conservation Nature Reserves to provide protected areas managed solely for the benefit of wildlife.
