The South West Atlantic Marine Environment: Research and Management
Proceedings of a Conference at the Royal Society, London - 7-8 June 2000
Editors: Michael J Osborne and Alasdair McIntyre

The Proceedings of this important Conference have just been published as a special issue of the journal Aquatic Conservation. They comprise a collection of papers from a range of disciplines - geology, oceanography and biology - bringing these together for consideration as an overall system focused on the South West Atlantic. Their publication provides an opportunity to share this expert knowledge and experience with the wider scientific community and with a public who may be surprised to learn that first-rate scientific research and scientifically based environmental policies are being pursued in this part of the South Atlantic.
The Conference divided into four main themes:
- Physical and Benthic Environments
- The Natural Marine Environment around the Falkland Islands
- The Wider Natural Environment of the South West Atlantic
- Managing the Falkland Islands as a Valuable Resource
These are reflected in the published papers:
- Overview of Petroleum Geology, Oil Exploration and Associated Environmental Protection Around the Falkland Islands: P Richards
- An Overview of the Oceanography and Meteorology of the Falkland Islands: J Upton and C J Shaw
- Modelling the South West Atlantic: P D Glorioso
- Critical Aspects of the Falkland Islands Pelagic Ecosystems: Distribution, Spawning and Migration of Pelagic Animals in Relation to Oil Exploration: D J Agnew
