New Falklands Seabird Report

A report which identifies concentrations of seabirds at different times of year in the waters around the Falkland Islands has just been published: Vulnerable Concentrations of Seabirds in Falkland Islands Waters. It has been compiled from a database of over 100,000 records of over 300,000 seabirds of 56 species and is the result of two year's survey work by Falklands Conservation's Seabirds at Sea Team, under contract from the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee.

The two areas of high priority in the survey area were those currently licensed for hydrocarbon exploration (blocks to the north) and those earmarked for future exploration (the Special Area of Co-operation).

The vulnerability maps for each month of the year identify those areas supporting seabird concentrations.

This important publication makes a significant contribution to the knowledge of marine life offshore. It will advise any activity that carries a perceived threat of surface pollution to the internationally important populations of seabirds on this part of the Patagonian Shelf.
