Falklands Wildlife Introduction

The Falklands and their marine surroundings are rich in wildlife:

• home to vast colonies of penguins and albatrosses
• breeding grounds for sea lions, elephant seals and fur seals
• 15 species of whales and dolphins
• more than 160 native flowering plant species grow in the Islands, 14 of which are endemic
• many unique insects including the rare and beautiful Queen of the Falklands Fritillary butterfly
• at least 200 species of birds have been recorded, of which more than 60 breed, including two endemic species (the Falkland Flightless Steamer Duck and Cobb's Wren) and 12 endemic races, plus the rare and local Johnny Rook (Striated Caracara) and Ruddy-headed Goose
• The Falkland Islands Countryside Code
