Seventy five families, 215 genera and 348 plant species have so far been recorded growing wild in the Falkland Islands and are listed in the checklist . Of these fifty-four families, 120 genera and 171 species are native.
Of international importance are the 13 endemic plants , those which are classified as globally threatened in the IUCN Red Data list , and plants for which the Islands hold a significant proportion of the world population (tussac grass ). Some plants are nationally protected by law in the Falkland Islands. Important Plant Areas describes the key sites.
